Although the Cartersville area has many intriguing sites, the "must-see attractions" listed below should be on every getaway itinerary.

Booth Western Art Museum (Visit)

A museum like no other in the southeast, the Booth Western Art Museum collection includes original works by early Western artists of the Taos School, as well as contemporary creations from the Cowboy Artists of America (CAA). Located at the museum’s north entrance, the sculpture Attitude Adjustment makes a magnificent statement about the extraordinary collection contained within. More than 200 paintings and sculptures, by more than 100 of the finest 20th century Western artists, depict the history and legends of the Old West. Additional galleries include Civil War, Presidential Letters and Portraits, Western Illustration and Western Movie posters, and The Sagebrush Ranch Children’s Gallery. Touring exhibits, artist lectures and western film screenings are offered. A museum store and café complete the experience. The Booth Western Art Museum is open Tuesday-Wednesday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m. Admission: $6 adults,$5 senior citizens, $4 students, ages 12 & under free.

Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site (Visit)

When Hernando De Soto rode into Etowah in 1540, this chiefdom reigned throughout a 50-mile radius. Today "Georgia's Ancient Indian City" is one of the best examples of a Mississippian Period town in existence. The largest of these earthen mounds stands 60 feet and covers more than three acres. The leaders' temples stood on these mounds, and thousands of people lived in the in the fortress city below. The site's museum portrays the mound builders' beliefs, artistry, trading practices and agriculture here on the banks on the Etowah River. Special events are hosted monthly. Open Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-5 PM and Sunday 2-5:30 PM. $3 adults, $2 ages 6-18. 770-387-3747.

Lake Allatoona & Visitor Center (Visit)

Outdoor recreation abounds around 12,000-acre Lake Allatoona. Bring your own boat, or rentals of houseboats to runabouts are available from the four marinas. Land lovers enjoy miles of pristine hiking trails and picnic areas. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Visitor Center at the top of the dam portrays regional history and natural resources. Allatoona Pass Battle Site (Visit)

Fought October 5, 1864, this bloody battle was the first of the Nashville Campaign. The attacking Confederate general referred to the impending battle as "A needless effusion of blood" in his demand for surrender minutes before the fighting began. Within three hours, there were 1,603 casualties. Allatoona is one of the most intact Civil War battle sites. Interpretative trail markers lead visitors to two earthen forts along miles of trench works surrounding the 160-foot mountain cut through which the W&A Railroad pass. Open year-round. Barnsley Gardens (More)

Enchanting gardens, magnificent history, championship golf course, superb dining, full-service spa and English-style resort village on the grounds of a romantic Englishman's 19th Century estate. Museum and gardens hours: Monday-Saturday 9 AM-6 PM and Sunday Noon-5 PM (Weekend hours may vary, please call ahead.) $10 adults, $8 seniors and $5 age 12 and under.

World's First Coca-Cola Wall Sign (Visit)

See a true advertising landmark on the side of Young Brothers Pharmacy in downtown Cartersville! Painted in 1894 by an enterprising Coca-Cola syrup salesman to front the busy railroad, the sign was restored and authenticated 1994. Note that the painter originally forgot to put the "i"
in "Drink" and inserted it at a slant.

Red Top Mountain State Park (Visit)

One of Georgia's most visited attractions, Red Top Mountain is truly a natural retreat for the city weary! Enjoy hiking, fishing, wildlife watching, putt-putt and beach facilities on the banks of refreshing Lake Allatoona.
