In the Theatre Lobby Gallery. Artwork by Bob Boze Bell and Thom Ross is routinely used on the cover of Western history books and magazines. Both are life-long students of Western history; yet choose to create their artwork in a stylized manner that separates it from traditional Western realism. This exhibition focuses on their work related to both famous and infamous Western icons such as Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, "Wild Bill" Hickok, Billy "The Kid" and many others.

In the Borderlands Gallery. Mark Gilliland's black and white photographs give us a behind-the-scenes look at the vernacular Rodeo traditions of small-town America. In fact, this exhibition features images taken at a recent rodeo in Ringgold just south of the Tennessee State Line in Georgia. The exhibition will include a photograph that was awarded Grand Prize in a competition for "Cowboys and Indians" Magazine.

This special exhibit features colorful textiles from the Bartow History Center Collection that are seldom seen. Primarily focused on clothing and accessories and arranged like a color wheel, the exhibit will describe what colors have meant to people in the past and today. Make plans to see this colorful side of history. Sponsorship of this exhibit is funded in part by Morris' Color Center and Benjamin Moore Paints.

SPACE SILENCE SPIRIT: Maynard Dixon's West

This exhibition features examples from two outstanding collections of Maynard Dixon's artwork. Over a half century after his death, Dixon is becoming recognized as one of the greatest Western artists of all time, regarded for his ability to blend real-life imagery of the West with modern influences. This is the first and largest known exhibition of Dixon's work in the Southeast, the artist's ancestral homeland. The A.P. Hays collection features paintings and sketches providing an overview of the artist's lengthy career, including photographs by Dixon's second wife, Dorothea Lange. Meanwhile, fifteen masterworks from the incomparable collection at the Brigham Young University Museum of Art in Provo, Utah will offer an opportunity to see Dixon at his very best.

MayFest

Historic Downtown Adairsville
Celebrating Adairsville's Past, Present and Future. Sponsored by Adairsville's Downtown Development Authority.
Activities include:
Monday - May 12, 7 p.m. at Adairsville City Hall - Gary Greene, The Great Imagineer. This well-known storyteller, songwriter and musician from Rome is a tour guide at New Echota State Historic Site in Calhoun. He will tell stories and perform songs that he has gathered from his early childhood experiences, as well as historical Cherokee stories, myths and Appalachian folktales. Greene's CD will also be available for purchase for $10 each.
Tuesday - May 13, 7 p.m. at Adairsville City Hall - Kanhiski - The Storyteller. Jerri Holloway, historian and curator of the museum housed in the Adairsville Depot, will tell traditional Cherokee legends in period costume.
Wednesday - May 14 - Lunch & Learn 11:30 a.m. at the Sans Souci Clubhouse - Margie Hufstetler of Adairsville, a noted and talented basket weaver, will conduct a basket-weaving class. Participants will be able to weave their own baskets. There will be a small fee for materials. Lunch will be served. Reservations must be made by May 12 - call Linda Bass, 770-773-3281.
Thursday - May 15 - History of the Dixie Highway - 7 p.m. at Adairsville Depot. Abbie Tucker Parks, co-author of the book "North Georgia's Dixie Highway" published in 2007, will speak about the book and the history of the Dixie Highway, the first interstate highway to link the American South with the urban North. Mrs. Parks will speak about the rise of tourism, businesses, and the chenille industry along the route, which ran right through the middle of Adairsville. There will also be copies of the 200-page pictorial book available for purchase for $20 each.
Friday - May 16 - Enjoy an outdoor concert from 7-9 p.m. in downtown. Adairsville's own Outback Band will perform their brand of music which includes country, Southern rock, and blues classics.
Saturday - May 17 - Adairsville Lions Club Bluegrass Festival in Log Town, 11-6 p.m. Free admission, but donations cheerfully accepted. Bleacher seating will be available, but festival-goers may bring their own lawn chairs. The Lions Club will have a variety of food available for purchase including barbecue, hamburgers, hot dogs, funnel cakes, drinks and more. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Duck Week: Duck Derby Seven Festival - Surfin' Safari

10 a.m.-5 p.m. Each year in May, Advocates for Children, a local non-profit dedicated to preventing child abuse and neglect, races tens of thousands of "adopted" rubber ducks down the Etowah River to the finish line. The grand prize winner claims a new car! Many other fabulous prizes donated by local businesses are awarded. There are arts and crafts vendors, a Kids Korner, entertainment and fun for all ages. This year's theme is Surfin' Safari! Its' all about the beach - tropical shirts, grass skirts, and "Hanging Ten!" Admission to the festival is free. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Visit these ancient mounds to learn about Native American flute making and traditional music from Tommy Wildcat, a full-blood Cherokee from Park Hill, Oklahoma. Back by popular demand, Wildcat will perform original flute music that earned him the honor of "Flutist of the Year" by the Native American Music Awards. Guests will learn how each flute is handmade from river cane or bamboo in the native tradition. Guests will recognize this popular musician from his appearances in The Discovery Channel series "How the West was Lost," and the TNT World Premiere of "Tecumseh, The Last Warrior," among others. Wildcat has also been well-received during his performances at Cartersville's Etowah Valley Indian Festival each October. Dancers and drummers will provide entertainment throughout the day. Three Mile Thrill fun family ride for all ages goes by Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site. Barnsley Gardens is a featured rest stop on other routes.
