Remember climbing on a shiny chrome stool at the soda counter to slurp a root beer float? Today it's not an easy feat to locate a soda fountain, but 100 years ago they were plentiful. The origin of soft drinks can be traced back to the mineral water found in natural springs, which was considered good for the health. Although non-carbinated soft drinks were available in the 17th century, it was only after scientists discovered that carbon dioxide was behind the bubbles in natural water, that the first drinkable man-made glass of carbonated water arrived on the scene in 1767. By the early 1800s, flavored carbonated soft drinks were available and early American pharmacies with soda fountains became popular. Soda fountains became a meeting place for people of all ages and a fixture in almost every drug store. Their popularity declined as the number of restaurants and fast food chains rose, and as commercial ice cream and bottled soft drinks became more available in grocery and convenience stores. Learn more about Bartow County's soda fountains and the drinks that were served there during this temporary exhibit.
