Come See Us in Georgia's Land of Cowboys, Indians and Southern Legends!
Did You Know?
Cartersville, Georgia was the genesis of two influential leaders of Christianity. Charlotte Diggs Moon, a teacher from Virginia, was moved by a sermon at the Cartersville First Baptist Church prompting her to become a Baptist Missionary to China. Women of the church saved pennies to support "Lottie's" mission. This simple offering became the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions. One of the most renowned evangelists in the late 19th century, Rev. Sam Jones, lived in Cartersville and began his ministry on the Van Wert circuit of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Upon his death in 1906, it is estimated that 30,000 mourners paid their respects at the State Capital in Atlanta, while thousands more met his funeral train at the depot in Cartersville. Today, visitors can learn more about the work of Lottie Moon and Rev. Sam Jones at Rose Lawn Museum, Jones' Victorian home in Cartersville.
Kenneth Freeman World Premiere Exhibit
The Booth Western Art Museum, an Affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, hosts the world premiere of the Kenneth M. Freeman Legacy Exhibition - Artist at Work opening on January 16, 2010. Artist Ken Freeman may have grown up in a traditional Jewish home in Chicago, Illinois but make no mistake ... he was a cowboy. His early career as an artist included illustrations for books by Louis L'Amour and Will James and culminated with compelling portraits of cowboys, Native American elders and children, mountain men, Buffalo Soldiers, western landscapes and rodeo heroes. The exhibit continues through May 2, 2010, and is the first temporary exhibit to be held in the Booth Museum's new Special Exhibition Gallery expansion which opened in October 2009. See PRESS ROOM for more details. Pictured here is Tough Draw by Kenneth M. Freeman.
